Backstage at Levitate Music Festival With Jack Johnson, Phil Lesh and Vulfpeck

Backstage at Levitate Music Festival With Jack Johnson, Phil Lesh and Vulfpeck

by Chad Bruce

At this past Summer's Levitate Music Festival, we had the opportunity to catch up with a few of our favorite people and ask them questions about what keeps them inspired to create and connect people with their music. We chatted about the power of music, the creative process, collaboration, family connections and a whole lot more.

We're excited to share with you the backstage conversations we had with these amazing artists - leading into the 10 year anniversary of the Levitate Music & Arts Festival and 20 years of Levitate, we're excited to share what goes on this year. Please enjoy, and stay tuned for more backstage tales at this July’s festival!

JACK JOHNSON - ON USING MUSIC FOR GREATER GOOD

All of us at Levitate have long been fans of Jack's commitment to using his music and his platform to spread awareness and support for the greater good, and for being a great ambassador for all surfers around the world. As we launched the Levitate Foundation this past Summer, which promotes creativity among kids within our community, we were so excited to catch up with him and talk about his work with his Johnson Ohana Foundation and his take on the value of music in his own family.

PHIL LESH - ON FAMILY-BASED CREATIVITY

Phil Lesh needs no introduction - as a legend in the world's collective music community, it was an honor to have him attend and perform at last year's Festival with his touring group of friends which included other icons like Amy Helm, Luther Dickinson, and his son Grahame Lesh. We caught up with Phil, Amy, and Grahame about the power of music in families and the culture of innovation and exploration that Phil helped shape.

VULFPECK - ON THE POWER OF COLLABORATION

The enigma of Vulfpeck lies deeply within the brains of Jack Stratton and Theo Katzman. We tried our best to tease out their secrets, and were met with the delightful reality that there is no master plan within Vulfpeck, just unbridled creativity and a desire to let things pan out as they come together. We dove in on a very fun mind bending chat about spontaneity, collaboration, and general life approach.
